>> The Soul Trembles at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, Canada
opening September 26th

The extensive solo exhibition The Soul Trembles will make its North American debut this autumn at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Following its acclaimed premiere at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo in 2019, this presentation marks the exhibition's tenth venue and a significant milestone in its international tour. Curated by Mami Kataoka, The Soul Trembles has traveled extensively across Asia-Pacific and Europe, introducing audiences around the world to Shiota's poignant artistic practice.
The immersive exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the most comprehensive collection of Shiota's work to date. Spanning over thirty years of the artist's work, it brings together large-scale installations, sculptures, photographs, drawings, performance videos, and documentation of her stage designs for theatre, dance, and opera.
Through recurring themes of memory, existence, identity, connection, and the passage of time, the exhibition invites viewers to set on a journey through Shiota's distinctive visual language and explore the emotional and existential questions at the heart of her practice.

New Solo Exhibition Catalogue: Chiharu Shiota Threads of Life

The solo exhibition catalogue produced by Hayward Gallery provides a comprehensive visual and critical exploration of the artist’s immersive, thread-based installations. Known for her large-scale networks of yarn, these site-specific, emotionally charged environments explore themes of life, death, memory, the human body, and what the artist describes as “existence in the absence.”

The publication includes installation views from past exhibitions, including works that have been reimagined for the solo exhibition Threads of Life, currently on view at Hayward Gallery. The catalogue also features an essay by curator Yung Ma and an in-depth interview with the artist conducted by novelist Yoko Tawada.
